Disclaimer
The aim of these guidelines is to inform family physicians and other primary care providers of the most prevalent health issues of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and optimal standards of care based on current knowledge. Any such guidelines, however, will inherently be limited in their application by the reality that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not a homogeneous group of patients and do not experience health disorders or respond to interventions in the same ways. The guidelines provide advice on reasonable standards of care in general. They are not intended to replace skilled clinical diagnoses or judgments regarding interventions based on discussions with patients and their caregivers.
