This tip sheet provides useful information for caregivers of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in behavioural crises. It addresses safety issues and information to give when contacting Emergency Medical Services, and gives practical and supportive suggestions to help the person with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Emergency Department.

The Developmental Disabilities Primary Care Program is currently in the process of updating this 2011 practice resource to reflect the Primary care of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities: 2018 Canadian consensus guidelines (Canadian Family Physician, Vol 64: April 2018). Updated practice resources are scheduled to be launched in October 2018.
